Day 6 of Hector Bounces Back and with Kenny at his side, Hector sets of for Brunch at a restaurant he visited at noon yesterday. That was a reconnaissance visit, Mein Host had verified the Lunchtime opening.
No – Curry-Gestern.
Almas Indisches Spezialitätenrestaurant (Birkenstrasse 69, 40233, Düsseldorf, Deutschland) is located a ten minute walk on the other side of the Hauptbahnhof, a chance to spot a flock of geese resident in a local park. Almas is a very brightly decorated Curry-House. White lanterns are prominent in the décor, Kenny recognised the source from which they came.
Arriving at 11.55, five minutes before the official opening time, we were welcomed and seated at our choice of table. The Menu featured the Midday Menu as the first page, the Main Menu followed. The Dishes were Mainstream and so Hector resorted to Plan B- Lamb Vindalo. No Bread, still a bit early.
Mein Host took the order and accepted the request for – Trocken, Minimal Sosse.
A few minutes later two plates of Soup were presented.
For the Mittagsmenu – Mein Host explained.
We had not ordered a Dish from this Menu, apparently we were having it. No problem.
A Simple Soup with Curry Powder to the fore, there was a Kick. It disappeared, a fine aperitif.
From the kitchen we could here Bread being prepared, lots of Slapping Sounds. We hadn’t ordered Bread.
Pilao Rice to share, and two portions of Curry arrived, we were still the only customers. The Curry was indeed Dry. The numerous large pieces of Potato made us both count the Meat. Six or Seven decent sized pieces of Lamb. Regardless of which tariff we were on, this was a fine quantity.
A basket with two round Naans were then brought, not huge, but an ideal size for one. No way would Hector eat all of his. The Naans had been properly prepared, we heard the Slapping. They had risen sufficiently and had the appropriate Burnt Bits. A Tandoor.
The Minimal Masala was absorbed by the Rice leaving the sought after Dry Curry. The Lamb was superb revealing Flavour as it was chewed. It was most evident that this had been properly Marinated / Slow Cooked. This was excellent Lamb. The quantity of Potato was significant, a very good feed. The balance of Spice and Seasoning definitely suited the Hector Palate, neither was OTT
Kenny was clearly enjoying his Curry too. Hopefully he will add his own comments soon.
The Bill
€23.50. The Lunchtime Tariff indeed. Great Value. Maybe I should be exploring this more?
The Aftermath
The Calling Card was given and the Website quickly shown. Mein Host had said little during our visit. A modest venue a modest Chap.
