Glasgow – Cafe Reeshah AND Sugar Rush – Red Pepper

Cafe Reeshah Nov2 Curry-Heute (12)Hector promised Marg a taste of possibly the finest Keema Mutter in Glasgow. Mince and Tatties happens to be Marg’s favourite meal, Simples. We entered a busy Café Reeshah (455 Shields Rd, Glasgow, G41 1NP) after 18.00. The first table was occupied by four diners tucking into Curry, various. Two chaps sat at the next of two waiting for a Pizza. They gave up the table so that Marg and Hector could prepare – To Dine.

I approached the counter, my fourth visit to Cafe Reeshah. A quick scan of what was on offer did not reveal Keema Mutter, and not even the Lamb and Potato Curry I have enjoyed previously. Only Chicken. Who eats Chicken Curry?t

I have seen PaCafe Reeshah Nov2 Curry-Heute (11)kora Curry popping up all over the country in Cafés. Marg loves Pakora, time to sample this strange creation, a portion to share and two Chapattis
There was no Sparkling Water and so branded lemonade was secured as I returned to the table. We watched the Takeaway customers come and go. Few ordered Curry, Pizza remains a favourite, I don’t get it.

A new chap brought the food. A Modest Salad and Dip was sampled by Marg. More Salad accompanied a Tandoori Tikka Leg – On-the-House – we were told. Thank you.

The Pakora Curry did not hit the spot. Too soft and served in a gloopy Masala, almost Cheesy. Too under-Seasoned for my palate, it was time to appreciate The Main Event.

The Chicken Mince was excellent, too Spiced for Marg it had a definite kick. No Seasoning problem here either. Given the modest prices one cannot expect a huge portion, with the Potatoes there was certainly enough especially when the Tandoori Chicken was shredded. Marg commented on the quality of the Chapattis, light and fresh, and a decent size.

Mein Host came across and asked if I had ever tried Haleem. I have see this written in the Desi sections of many menus. Albert Drive came to mind, indeed, and the now defunct Southside branch of The Banana Leaf. Alas, Dr. Rick ordered something else that night.  There is a search device on this Website – It works!  Dr. Rick had Shahi Haleem at The New Karahi Palace.  A Soupçon was requested, that turned out to be enough. Lamb and Lentils coCafe Reeshah Nov2 Curry-Heute (8)oked until they pulp. An acquired taste? Maybe. Hector will stick to Lamb Karahi please, or Keema Mutter next visit.

£11.00. Marg couldn’t believe it. OK, this is a Takeaway with two tables, portions are not enormous, but look at the spread. We had been fed like royalty.

The Aftermath

Sugar Rush Red Pepper Curry-Heute (1)We had passed Sugar Rush – Red Pepper (32 St Andrews Road, Glasgow, G41 1PF) en route. Time for Dessert. I had set foot in these premises in the Summer to investigate. They appear to serve everything but Curry.
The window tables were occupied but one became free as we entered. Only later did we spot the inner room. In two parts, Sugar Rush deals with all that Marg holds dear. Almost a separate operation within the same house, Red Pepper serves the savoury, even steaks if that is what one wishes.

    The reason you found the Kurry to be cheesy (or creamy) is because in the old days it was the best use for left-over yoghurt/lassi when there was no refrigeration.

    Now it is a fancy dish in our households.
