The Fridge Night
A tradition that has been lost in recent times was resurrected this evening. Steve and Hector were the two participants, however we were joined by colleagues passing through. The new 50mg Breath Test has put the wind up some, other would-be attendees fear the morra’. It’s a Friday Night, Bier and Curry Night!
The Akash (45 Sinclair St, Helensburgh, G84 8TG) served Hector and Alan astonishingly wonderful Curry last Saturday. I texted Ashgar, Mein Host, midweek to state that the refined Hector Special #2 was most certainly the Best Curry I have ever eaten on these premises.
Steve and Hector entered the Akash just after 21.00, we would be the only Diners for the rest of the evening. This is an outrage. The other Helensburgh Curry Outlets – No. 28 and Masala Twist serve Fine Curry, the Akash is, however, streets ahead. Steve related he had a Family Dinner at the Akash recently and those not regular here were thoroughly impressed. So why is the Akash not heaving? Maybe they need to market themselves more, open at lunchtimes, re-decorate? The People of Helensburgh are not aware of what they have on their doorstep.
The Mixed Combo Starter is out of this World, a Splendid Array of Seekh Kebab, Chicken Tikka and Lamb Tikka. Sharing is possible as everything is doubled up. Tonight Steve and Hector ordered a portion each, decadence. But what for The Mains?
Last Saturday’s Lamb Chops Methi Achari was pre-ordered. Ashgar was confident that Rashid, The Chef, would do me proud. The Hector Special #3 was recorded. Steve asked for a Lamb Curry with Extra Methi (no Capsicum). A Naan for Steve and a Plain Paratha for Hector. It was time to re-evaluate the Quality of the non-stuffed version, how Flaky would it be served?
The Mix Combo was Sublime, one could eat this all night, but it isn’t Curry. What came for the Mains took Hector by surprise. There were bones, Lamb Chops and Tender Lamb. Somehow last Saturday’s Delight was replicated. The Great Curry-Heute Test is – OK, serve Hector an Astonishing Curry, can you repeat this? Here we go…
The Citra Flavours emerged immediately. The Masala was as Thick as Hector desires, the Methi present but not dominating. Dryness is relative, this was Dry-Dry. The Karahi was excavated, there wasn’t a molecule of Oil to be seen at the base. A Seriously Dry Curry. Once again the Lamb was Tender as Lamb can be. The Spice Level was off the scale, this was a demanding dinner. Cue the sweat beads. Spicy, Man. This Curry is among the Very Best ever ever served to Hector. The refined Hector Special #2 has now well and truly become The Hector Special #3.
Engrossed in my own pleasure, I failed to observe that Steve ate every morsel of the Super-sized Naan, how did he manage that? He must have been starving. The Plain Paratha was amongst the best I have ever been served also. Suitably Flaky.
Steve’s Lamb Curry did all he could ask. Steve too was again very impressed by an Akash Curry. Maybe he will take the time to add more comments.
Why are people only buying Takeaways? The Staff are lovely, the food outstanding. At least I know of two soon-to-be Helensburgh Residents who will become Regulars.
The Bill
£39.75. Mains, Starters, more Bier. Great Value, Great Service.
The Aftermath
Hector tapped on the window of the kitchen door, Rashid and his assistant were sitting, they had done their work for today. Rashid spotted me through – the round window – and immediately was out to greet us. We plan, the three of us, to visit the Very Special Yadgar together in the New Year. Hopefully this will come off. Meanwhile, in the photo, Rashid holds Hector’s now Wholly Unreliable Samsung, featuring the Curry-Heute Homepage set at 2500080 Hits. Thank you, All.
I cannot sing the praises of the Akash high enough. The food is excellent and they will cook you a curry exactly the way you want it. It is without a shadow of a doubt, the best curry house for miles around. Like my friend Hector, I too cannot understand why this place is overlooked by so many local curry lovers. If you live in Helensburgh or the surrounding area, I would urge you to give the Akash a try.
