Italia no more, now for some Yorkshire. This leg of the October Vacation was actually planned first, the Euro sequence a prequel. Italia was the best available destination from Manchester Airport, why pay the Scottish Airport Premium at this time of year when Scottish schools are closed?
Diwali 2017
One night in Huddersfield provided the Opperchancity to return to Lahori Taste (36 Chapel Hill, Huddersfield, HD1 3EB, England) which has impressed greatly in the last couple of years. Visits may be sporadic, however, Hector was recognised on entry around 19.00 this evening. Hands were shaken, Chefs acknowledged, all was set. Lamb Karahi (£6.50) with extra Methi is the Curry which has brought me back here, a Plain Paratha (£2.00) would accompany. Keema Karahi (£5.50) with a Chapatti (£0.50) was Marg’s choice, this was her first visit to Lahori Taste. Two cans of Mango Rubicon (£0.80) completed the Order.
The Bill
£16.00 This was paid, then Hector decided to – Go Large. £2.50 more.
We took the table beside two Chaps who were finishing their Curry, a Large Portion to share. To share? They departed moments later leaving us as the Lone Diners. I updated my photos of the Menu which still claims that Lahori Taste is open at 11.00, it isn’t. The Menu displayed above the counter had something not on the printed menu Lamb Joints (£6.50).
I asked Mein Host – You now do Lamb on-the-bone? This was confirmed.
Next time.
A metal tray containing a Modest Salad and two Dips was placed on the table. The Breads arrived in Baskets, one very appealing Chapatti and one Perfect Paratha served Whole! The Paratha was Thin compared to the Wholemeal versions I have experienced of late. This had the – Correct Flour – and was suitably – Layered and Flaky – and almost too Hot to touch. I would have to take care not to overdose on this, Hector had a Large Curry to deal with.
Keema Karahi
Served on a plate, the absence of Peas made this Curry appear naked. This is what Marg wanted, straight Mince.
Yum – was an almost instantaneous reaction when she scooped the first grains into her Chapatti. The Keema Karahi was demolished in no time at all, the Chapatti appreciated, a great success.
Tantalising tastes, easy to eat, the Spice was spot on – declared Marg.
Lamb Karahi – Lamb Methi
There was more Meat than I could count, I stopped at thirty almost Bradford-small pieces. A strip of the Paratha was dipped into the Dark, Herb Rich, Thick Masala. Mmmmm. I could taste the Lamb was – Lamb, a point always worth making. There was an underlying Sweetness which puzzled given the Methi content. This was not the Overall Flavour I have enjoyed here previously. The Spice Level was more than Sufficient but in no way Extreme. Seasoning v Sweetness was the dilemma. I would have preferred more of the former and less of the latter.
Marg inevitably was finished long before me. She suggested that I did not have to finish it. I knew I was hungry enough to eat all of this, the flat karahi was cleared, only a morsel of Paratha was leftover. Success.
The Aftermath
The Rat and Ratchet is next door. Approaching the bar the Barman asked –
Been for a Curry?
How could he tell?
Chef made an appearance in the Rat and Ratchet later, to use the Facilities?
Hands were shaken. Lahori Taste, quite a venue, there are many more in Huddersfield to explore. Still I shall return here – Fish Karahi and Lamb Joints have to be explored.
