The Saga of Curry in Erlangen continues. Hector is intrigued as to why there are so many Curry Houses in a town of this size. The Delhi Indisches Restaurant (Theodor-von-Zahn-Straße 19, 91052 Erlangen, Deutschland) was open from 11.00 this morning, Hector arrived from Bamberg just after Noon.
Located towards the east beyond the town centre, Delhi occupies the ground floor of a residential block. The exterior suggests dining al fresco in the summertime. The interior made The Hector smile, just how much paraphernalia does a Restaurant need to convey that it is – Indian?
Mein Host, resplendent in Turban, brought the Menu but advised the Lunchtime Buffet was on offer. This was declined, Hector wished to investigate what the Chef could produce for a more Hector-like Curry. The Buffet appears to have been very limited anyway with only three steel platters visible.
Fish Curry was what Hector had in mind. Despite an extensive Fish Curry List, the mind refocused on the Lamb Section – Lamm Achari (€15.20), this could kick-start the Taste-buds.
Two Cumin embedded Poppadoms accompanied Four Dips, Complimentary as is the European Norm. Only one was eaten with the Tamarind. Tasty enough.
The Curry was presented on an elaborate pair of heaters designed as a Carriage, Neat. Amusing, Effective. The Curry was clearly – Soup, there was enough Rice to feed India.
Due to the height of the Carriage, great care had to be taken when spooning first the Rice, then the Achari, else the table would have been covered. Mustn’t stain the tablecloths.
As each piece of Lamb was decanted it became evident that there was a lot of Lamb present. A dozen pieces of varied sizes, more than enough. The Lamb proved to be very Tender, but gave nothing back to the Curry Experience. Lamb in Sauce.
The Masala was the Classic Deutsche Curry Sauce, Tomato Soup, a slightly Creamy one too. One is left to wonder as to what the Onion Content was in this – Masala. The Seasoning was Fine, there was a Decent Kick. There was absolutely no sense of Pickle present, no Tang, no sign of Lime Rind. The Ginger Strips which are visible on the Top were present throughout the Curry, these gave a Crunch but were insufficient in the goal towards being the – Interesting Vegetable.
This was Curry? As has been written to often, this is what passes for – Curry – in too many European Venues. Being resident in Bamberg for five days, comparison with the dreaded Swarg is inevitable. Was the Swarg that Poor, the Worst Curry designation deservedly belongs to an Orkney Curry House. Deutches Curry may be – Bland, none has made Hector ill as that terrible night in Orkney.
The Bill
€17.20. A couple of Euros above the norm.
The Aftermath
The Calling Card was accepted, however any further discourse was abbreviated when further Diners entered.
Spater in Bamberg
The Keesmann Bock was the main objective of the day. Pleasant, but not as grabbing as it was some five years ago when it could have been the Finest Bier on The Planet. The Company dined at the Keesmann Gaststätte (Wunderburg 5, 96050, Bamberg, Deutschland) this evening. Alan, consciously or otherwise ordered Putensteak Curryrahmsauce mit Reis. A Turkey Curry in a Creamy Sauce. Now this was most certainly – Soup.
Alan – A perfectly good, Curry, other people would have enjoyed it, just not my style.
Is there decent Curry served in Bamberg? Hector will have to investigate, this means a return to Swarg and hopefully an evening visit to the newer Cafe Zafran.
Feel your pain Mr.The Hector on missions such as these..
‘Twas only last week, after all,i was commending you on your dedicated spirit of new ventures.I finally understand-with this post- it may well often be a burden for you on the Continent..the triumph of hope over experience,if you will?
Nevertheless…kudos to you for always moving onto new pastures.
Dunno why but just had to laugh about the fella in the full turban…no real reason other than it just seemed rather quaint and old school, but cool too =)
Hector replies:
Whatever happens in Bamberg and its Hinterland, the promise of something Very Special awaits this weekend.
