Kebab Mahal – 7 Nicolson Square, Edinburgh EH8 9BH

Established in the early 1990s, Kebab Mahal may well be the oldest of three – Lahori-Punjabi – Curry Cafes in Edinburgh-Leith known to Hector and therefore covered with a dedicated page in Curry-Heute. Lazeez Tandoori near Haymarket has been praised for many years, Desi Pakwan (Leith) is worthy of more investigation. Meanwhile, Kebab Mahal with its punctual, noon opening time, has proved to be a reliable source of lunchtime/mid-afternoon Curry. A good place to start the day, after all, when Hector is through in The Capital, there is always a mission.
It was Glasgow Curryspondents who made me aware of Kebab Mahal, the first visits were in 2018-19, there would have been more if Rustom Restaurant (Haymarket) hadn’t popped up, they too are open all day. When dining alone, the Curry Cafe is perceived as being the best place to enjoy authentic Fayre, and so from 2021, Kebab Mahal became Hector’s preferred daytime Edinburgh venue. Kebab Mahal is a ten minute walk from Waverley Station, take the bus otherwise.
Mr. Khan, Mein Host, is usually present, else his son will take care of you.
Mr. Khan likes empty plates – is a quote attributed to the latter.
