Lahore Kebab House – 2-10 Umberston St., Whitechapel, London, E1 1PY, England
Founded in 1972, Lahore Kebab House is a rarity, a – London Curry House – appearing in Hector’s Recommended Curry Houses. The most visited – The India Club – Hotel Strand Continental – disappeared at the end of 2023. Sheba aside, forget Brick Lane, if one desires Lahori/Punjabi – Desi Curry then one has to travel well out of the centre. Tooting (Wandsworth) has been partially covered in these pages, the surface of Southall (Ealing) has only been scratched, writes the Hector having made the fifth and defining visit to Lahore Kebab House in Whitechapel (Tower Hamlets).
With six Whitechapel Curry Houses reviewed, Lahore Kebab House has become the go-to venue, yet I cannot write that the Curry here is outstanding. No – wow! – moments have been recorded. Consistency in presentation has proved to be an issue. The Fish Curry of 2019 was way better than the 2023/4 version. The food is – satisfying, tasty. Prices v portions are fine, value for money.
Lahore Kebab House is a spacious Curry Cafe with a large room facing the main road for functions. Getting a seat in the main room has never been an issue. One assumes the business has grown into its premises.A – BYOB – system operates. A cash machine is embedded in the outside wall for times when cash is necessary.
Seekh Kebab, priced singly, is always worth considering to pass the time until one’s Curry appears.
House Specials, which were previously available from Wednesday to Sunday only, are more readily available. Strangely, the Dry Curry – the style which Hector favours most, has yet to be sampled. Then there’s the – Chef’s Specials.
