Mother India’s Cafe – Glasgow – Scotland

Mother India’s Cafe

1355 Argyle St, Glasgow, G3 8AD

Open all day, mid afternoon is Hector’s preferred time to visit. There’s even an attractively priced mid afternoon Tapas menu for couples.

Machi Masala, the best Fish Curry served in Glasgow? Who says? Hector!

Though in 2024, Hector suggests it may have lost its edge.

Machi Masala

Butter Chicken, the best of its type served in Glasgow, anywhere? Who says? Marg.

Butter Chicken

One thing is certain, Hector will keep coming back for the Fish  but never order the latter, but for those who like that sort of thing, it’s – creamy with a kick – as Marg has assured me over the years.

Located in Glasgow’s West End, prices here are appreciably more than one can expect to pay in Hector’s favourite Southside Curry Cafes. Mother India’s Cafe serves Tapas sized portions in house but full sized portions for Takeaway. I deduce the latter based on price, never having ordered a Takeaway here.  The Dishes can come as they are ready, not necessarily together.

Mother India’s Cafe is part of the Mother India chain of Curry Houses which rapidly expanded their number of outlets in Glasgow and opened a branch in Edinburgh. Four of the the once six Glasgow outlets remain: here, the original Mother India restaurant, next door at Dining In, and the expanded Wee Curry Shop on Buccleuch St. in the city centre.

Pratap, the original Chef in Buccleuch St now has his own restaurant – Curry Cottage – around the corner.  As for the other two Wee Curry Shops, the Byres Rd. outlet became independent and evolved into Little Curry House,  which also took over their adjacent premises. The  Ashton Lane Wee Curry Shop  closed, Vini and Sharma from there, opened the again independent, Chimes of India. This restaurant lies almost directly opposite the original, and seemingly never to be visited again  Mother India a short distance to the east in Kelvinhaugh. That the mother house does not feature prominently in Curry-Heute is a saga already told.

Booking is not possible, unlike the nearby mother houseMother India – the restaurant.

The walls are adorned with the faces of dignitaries associated with Curry in Glasgow.
