Namak Mandi – 21-23 Bridge St, Glasgow G5 9JB
Located in Laurieston, one block south of the River Clyde, Namak Mandi is the fourth Afghan Restaurant to open in Glasgow. Namak Mandi opened in the autumn of 2017. Strictly speaking, this is a Peshawari Restaurant, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (Pakistan) being located on the eastern end of the Khyber Pass. The original Khyber was wonderful, but closed after a couple of years. Those premises were eventually re-opened as the Khyber Pass Restaurant by Abdul from the short-lived Afghan Village.
In the autumn of 2022, Namak Mandi was set to move round the corner to larger premises on Norfolk Street. Watch this space.
Hector’s love of Lamb Karahi is well documented in these pages, the Afghan version is simpler than the Punjabi, a step closer to Namkeen Karahi which is also available at Namak Mandi. Namkeen Karahi is only available by the kilo (£23.99) and requires advance notice.
In the main dining room, as well as tables and chairs, there are raised dais for those which wish to sit in a more traditional manner. Having acquired the adjacent unit, Namak Mandi has much more space which they refer to as their Banqueting Hall. It is here that the excellent value Lunch Buffet was served, pre-Covid.
