Sapfous 5, Athina 105 53
Walk some three blocks north from the magical Iroon Square in Psyri, and one should end up on the back street which is Menandrou, the start of the Curry Paradise which exists between here and Omonia. Nearly every block has a Curry Cafe selling Desi/Apna Cuisine at prices one has to see to believe. This is where the workers come to eat, the prices accommodate this, everything is cheap and cheerful, the Curry is authentic.
Don’t underestimate the portion sizes, especially the Kofta Anda. Four people dining for €20.00 is the norm.
The sister outlet – Pak Taka Tak – has been championed in these pages for some years. In 2020, Hector found himself at Pak Tikka Shop – Grill House three times, to describe the Fayre as – outstanding – would be an understatement. With better English spoken at Pak Tikka Shop, the staff offer that extra welcome. The owner has a third outlet between these two shops on Menandrou, a Sweet House – Chask*a – Sweet Faluda Shop – as established on the day he took us on a tour of his premises.
On trying to establish the difference with – Pak Taka Tak – the first time dining at – Pak Tikka Shop – Hector was advised:
Here is less spicy, the other one is spicy.
This I have come to question, the food here is – Spicy. I have yet to try their Karahi Gosht, however, the Keema Matar and Kofta Anda are quite simply – sublime.
On entering, approach the counter to see what is available. The very welcoming staff will talk you through the Dishes on display.
The printed menu is the same as Pak Taka Tak.
If the main seating area is busy, try upstairs, larger groups can be accommodated here.
Bottled Water, Salad and Raita are presented on taking one’s seat. The Naan is so soft and fresh, a treat in itself.
