Glasgow – Ambala Deli Bar – A New Discovery!

It is possible that Hector could have returned from India having had enough, of the Cuisine? Apparently not, the thought of returning to European Food… not yet.

Ambla Glasgow Curry-Heute (1)Ambla Glasgow Curry-Heute (4)It was on a Favoured Social Medium that Hector first encountered a seemingly new Glasgow Southside Venue Ambala Deli Bar (11 Forth St., Glasgow, Scotland, G41 2SP). Howard had posted a – Like – now he claims never to have heard of the place. Located two minutes from Pollokshields East train station, one stop from Glasgow Central, Forth Street is not one people would be walking along. This is the heart of Glasgow’s Zone of Transition, and also close to the established Asian Community. Open from Noon each day until 22.00, this could suit Hector’s mid-afternoon eating pattern.

Hector is out for Lunch, Karahi Gosht is required, it has been too long. The Waiter invited to choose any table, only one was occupied. I chose a vantage point at the rear of the room, there was a feeling that this venue was very much a work in progress, the décor was not quite finished. Or is this the new Chic?

Ambla Glasgow Curry-Heute (12)The Handi Gosht was tempting, however they require forty minutes notice to prepare this, or as I have come to appreciate at nearby Yadgar, have a Starter, let it digest. The Desi Dishes included Batery – Quail, which has been enjoyed when more than one is presented. Nihari, Paya and Haleem are the Punjabi Dishes that Hector has learned to leave well alone.

Ambla Glasgow Curry-Heute (10)Ambla Glasgow Curry-Heute (11)Lamb Chops Masala Karhi (£9.95) – too soon, let’s see what their Basics are like. Many Dishes tempted, Desi Karahi Gosht (£8.99) on-the-bone is what I had hoped for on entering the premises, here it was. A Plain Paratha (£2.70) would accompany.

Fifteen minutes – advised The Waiter.

The Order placed I had to ask about the background to this venue. One and a half years in operation  made me ponder further about the state of the Decor, we may never know what it was like a year ago. Indeed, what was this building used for previously?

Ambla Glasgow Curry-Heute (15)The Calling Card was given this early, I felt I had to justify the photos. Ambala seats around fifty, the tables are separated by partitions, the painting of which is ongoing. Two Dips were provided at the start, but as I ordered nothing to accompany them, I wondered. Leave them alone. I now had five Fellow Diners, a Ridiculously Large Bowl of Ice Cream was presented to one. Methinks Marg may be happy here. A glass was provided for the Mango Rubicon (£1.10), the wait was over.

Plain Paratha

This was quartered which I find annoying, but served on a wooden board, different. Hot, Fresh, Flaky, Tasty, this was as good a Paratha as one could hope for. I know The Reader has already glanced below.

Desi Karahi Gosht

Ambla Glasgow Curry-Heute (18)Those who have read these pages previously will know that this is a Classic Hector Curry. Topped with a forest of Fresh Coriander Leaves, the Masala Mash on the surface appeared a bit Watery initially, with the Oily Residue collecting around the periphery. This is how it is, enough Moisture, no more. There appeared to be Loads of Lamb, more Meat than I have eaten in the last couple of weeks. Some of the Lamb had gone to Pulp, the Texture of the Majority was Sound. The Seasoning was right on the limit of acceptable, the Spice Level was Perfect for Hector, others may have been taken by surprise.

Ambla Glasgow Curry-Heute (19)There was a New Flavour, something that would make this standout out from The Mainstream. Mr. Arshad at Yadgar has his Secrets, Rashid at The New Karahi Palace has his. It is possible that Hector has found a new Wonder House. The Curry-Heute Test will be applied as soon as, can they repeat this, or even improve upon it?

The Pile of Sucky Bones was Modest, the Ambla Glasgow Curry-Heute (21)Fun was had. The Hector was sated.

I was offered a second Paratha, I told The Waiter I would never finish the first. He was attentive throughout my visit, keen to see I had everything I required. Appreciated.

The Bill

£12.79. This was the expected total. I have read in Other Sources, of people who challenged the Billing, this was accurate.

The Aftermath

There was a Suited Chap sitting in an office chair at the window. Mein Host? I asked another Chap – no he just works from there.

There is much to learn about the Ambala Deli Bar. Hector shall return.

The Lamb Chops and the Fish Pakora appear to be expensive.
