Curry-Heute : Every day is a good day to eat Curry
Curry-Heute (Curry-Today) is – more than just a Glasgow Curry Blog, though as a native of Scotland, the coverage of Hector’s homeland dominates. Curry-Heute is also about exploration, with a view to discovering venues which serve Curry as good as, or possibly even better than Glasgow’s Top Rated. Curry-Heute reports the extensive travels of the near mythical Hector who has sought out the Curry House for decades, retaining records consistently since 2010. This is a Blog of all Curry consumed. If you cook Curry, Hector will visit, eat and review.
One does not criticise those who are happy to visit their local Curry House every week and order the same dish, enjoy your Curry. For twenty years, Lamb Rogan Josh at the Akash in Helensburgh was all. Since 1995 Hector has undertaken regular visits to Bradford, Yorkshire. The first Bradford Curry was a life changing experience, a new standard was set. In 1996, Mother India opened in Glasgow precipitating a Curry Revolution, yet there have been few visits: there is even better Curry to be found in Glasgow’s Curry Cafes.
Since 2010, Curry-Heute has become recognised in Scotland, throughout the UK, Europe, and beyond as a reliable source of information. Hector, the author of this site, was a finalist for Curry Lover of the Year – 2011, 2012, 2016 and 2018 in the Scottish Curry Awards. Read Lust for Curry to discover the origins of Hector’s 60 years of eating Curry.
Glasgow was voted The Curry Capital of Britain in 2010
Hector is appreciative of the quality of Curry served on his doorstep, though this is ever changing cf. – Gone but not forgotten.
The Village Curry House, was Hector’s favourite venue before Curry-Heute was conceived. Yadgar Kebab House was the first great discovery in the Curry-Heute era and became the first venue to have 100 reviews. Karahi Palace, on the same street as The Village, was walked past for years, eventually becoming Hector’s second most frequented venue in Glasgow. However, Karahi Palace changed hands in 2023, twice. Handi by Darbar is slowly earning the mantle of being the honoured successor.
Glasgow delights, Bradford endures!
In 2011 Bradford regained the title of – Curry Capital – and has retained it.
For approaching thirty years, Hector has championed the Curry of Bradford: International, Kashmir, and the Sheesh Mahal have tantalised, Sarina’s at Queensbury became a new favourite, alas Sarina has stood back, for a while, hopefully. With the opening of the Bradford-based Akbar’s in Glasgow, the link is complete.
The International Perspective
India 2016 – The Trip is related in full – here.
Curry in Deutschland, indeed across Europe, has been well behind the UK for the forty plus years Hector has eaten Curry there; contemporary venues and experiences are evolving. Indian Mango in München has a South Indian Curry menu and has matched anything served in Hector’s favourite Curry houses in the UK. Erlangen intrigues, so many venues in this moderately sized Frankonia town. Belgium always disappointed, 2018 revealed hope in both Brussel and Gent.
2014 saw the first Italia Curry reviews and the Düsseldorf coverage addressing the imbalance which had previously favoured Köln. 2015 saw the introduction of Morocco, the third North African nation featured in Curry-Heute, and a continuation of the extended coverage of Polska. 2016 introduced España, and 2017 Madeira (Portugal) and Latvija. In 2019, Malta was explored, then later in the year, Slovakia, and a long overdue expansion of the coverage of Österreich. Since retirement in 2015, there has been an annual return to Hellas-Greece where sources show Curry-Heute has many readers. Athena has many impressive, authentic outlets, Pak Taka Taka being the best discovered to date. Trips to Lisboa in 2020, 2022, 2023 and 2024 have unearthed other sources of Curry as the Hector likes it, authentic, and served in – no frills – Curry Cafes. If you’re serious about Curry, head to Rua do Benformoso.
2024 saw – Le Tours du Monde en 80 Jours – which added Curry in Singapore, Australia, New Zealand and Canada, plus further visits to Seattle‘s outstanding Chili’s South Indian Cuisine, also two major discoveries in the east of the USA: Shalimar of India (Burlington VT) and especially Curry Leaf (Albany NY).
