Curry Pot – Glasgow – Scotland

Curry Pot139 Dumbarton Road, Glasgow, G11 6PR

This is an address which is legendary in the history of Hector’s Curry eating, and certainly one of the oldest Curry Takeaway venues in the City. I know it dates back to 1974, that summer I started working in Wilson’s Bar (James D. Wilson, now Santa Lucia Pasta) and continued to do so on and off for the next three years. Tea-break meant food, food meant Curry, at least once a week. The nearest venue was next door to what is now the 3 Judges (Bennett’s/Tower Bar). The 1970’s staple Curry – Meat and Mushroom Bhuna Vindaloo was the usual order.  I think I ordered my first  ever Biryani from these premises.

Curry Pot was first visited in 2013, soon after it opened. Still a Takeaway, a couple of makeshift tables and chairs had been installed to let those who insisted, sit-in. Simrat, Mein Host, was happy to produce a bespoke Curry for Hector – Lamb Methi Bhuna. Despite my appreciation being recorded as – perfectly competent and enjoyable Curry, there was no return to Curry Pot until 2025, maybe something to do with the pub next door becoming less of an attraction.

More formal seating was installed back in 2018. A capacity of ten exceeds that of the comparable New Cafe Reeshah across the river. No facilities, use the pub next door.

The sit-in menu features portions which I shall describe as Tapas-plus. Eating here in the early afternoon, adequate. Takeaway portions are dearer, and assumed to be larger.

Simrat, plus Chefs Suriya and Rajiv turn out tasty food at a level significantly above a standard Takeaway.  Curry Pot is open seven days a week from mid afternoon.
