Glasgow – Sheerin Palace – Come for The Kofta

Sheerin Palalce Glasgow Curry-Heute.com Jun3 (2)The sun is shining, the temperature has risen to a modest 15°C, it’s meant to be summer. Finding a parking space along Allison St. and its surroundings proved to be difficult. Curry at the Sheerin Palace (300 Allison St, Glasgow, G42 8HQ) was calling. It’s 13.30 on a Wednesday, yes Midweek. Such are the joys of winding down.
Mein Host smiled in recognition, Sheerin Palace remains a Favourite, despite the sporadic visits.
What do you have on today?
There were a couple of gaps under the counter-top. The usual Chicken Biryani and Chickpea Curry were on display. A mean-looking Chicken Palak would have tempted most. When Hector sees Kofta Anda sitting in a Red, Fiery, Oily Masala, it has to be. One Chapatti please.
The Chap sitting adjacent was finishing Kofta Anda, another nearer the window was halfway though his Biryani. This is genuine Desi Cuisine served in a Café Ambience. Sheerin Palace is perfect for a Snack/Lunch. The Takeaway Business is constant.
Sheerin Palalce Glasgow Curry-Heute.com Jun3 (3)Sheerin Palalce Glasgow Curry-Heute.com Jun3 (4)

The Food arrived in moments, as soon as the ample Chapatti was prepared. Four Lamb Kofta Balls, each had to be halved. Two halves of a Boiled Egg. Small in the Hector Book of Curry Portions, however, at this time of day, more than Substantial.
Sheerin Palalce Glasgow Curry-Heute.com Jun3 (1)The First Dip with a strip off the Real Chapatti – Gosh! The Thin-styled Masala was Classic Shorva. The Onion Base was visible, just. The Seasoning and Spice were Perfect. A Single Strand of a Herb was visible, Reading back to an earlier visit here, Hector was critical of this version of Curry, still learning, put in my place. Rice would have absorbed the Liquid, it spoils the Rawness of The Dish. This is Tardis Curry, taking one back in time.

The Bill
£6.00. Lunch.

The Aftermath
A Fresh Tray of a Vegetable Curry had been placed on display in the interim. Pity not sooner.

Glasgow – Yadgar – Beyond The Fish

Yadgar May30 Curry-Heute (6)Yadgar May30 Curry-Heute (2)

Thursday: 20.52
Shkoor, Dear Chap! For Saturday @15.20 to let the fitba’ people dissipate, we are 4.
For The Chaps 1kg Goshat Karahi, hold nothing back. Mags portion of Aloo Gosht, Eleanor portion Goshat Karahi.
All Karahi with Bones, no bones in the potatoes.
Fish as always welcome, but an array of Shami and Chapli could be a change.
Eight minutes later, the booking was confirmed.
On Monday, Marg and Hector simply dropped in and the Daily Special – Karela Gosht was thoroughly enjoyed. If one wishes – to be fed – at Yadgar (148 Calder St., Govanhill, Glasgow, G42 7QP), it is better to arrange in advance.
And so Stewart would today have his first full blown Yadgar Experience having only ever dropped in one lunchtime previously.
The Transformation
Yadgar May30 Curry-Heute (3)As reported on Monday, and updated on Tuesday by Stanley, Yadgar is finally going through interior renovations some months after the exterior scaffolding has been removed. Mr. Anwar Sr. talked us through the ongoing transformation. The floor tiles which were covered on Monday are now exposed. The walls have reached their final coat with tiles at the base. The rear wall is tiled. Beige now dominates. Light shades have yet to be fitted and something I couldn’t follow is going to happen at the window.

Yadgar May30 Curry-Heute (4)Yadgar May30 Curry-Heute (5)

Yadgar May30 Curry-Heute (1)The serving area too will be upgraded. Most importantly, the toilet is now a most welcoming area. Shiny and White with an electronic hand-dryer in the common vestibule, nobody will ever again have second thoughts about using The Facilities.
The Tables and Chairs are also due to be replaced, the current occupants being on the large side. The seating capacity could easily be increased without claustrophobia setting in.
Would today be our last sitting at this furniture?

Yadgar May30 Curry-Heute (8)Yadgar May30 Curry-Heute (7)

With The Four assembled, the Poppadoms and Dips were brought as a conveyor. The Hot Salad was being distributed when Naveed brought a Bowl of Something White.

What’s the name for this?

Raita. It was much more than Raita, another Salad by any other identification.

Yadgar May30 Curry-Heute (9)Yadgar May30 Curry-Heute (10)

And so to the Shami and Chapli Kebabs.

Yadgar May30 Curry-Heute (12)Yadgar May30 Curry-Heute (13)

Four Shami, sensible, with a Texture reminiscent of Fish Cakes, a pleasant change. Three Large Chapli Kebabs were halved, Six Pieces, still daunting. The Spice Level was wonderful, I’m glad I made the change, it’s not often I get these.
Yadgar May30 Curry-Heute (11)Yadgar May30 Curry-Heute (15)

The Table was covered in Quality, Healthy Food. Progress was steadily being made when a Large Tray with Two Large Spiced Haddock were added to The Fray.
Yadgar May30 Curry-Heute (14)We should have The Starters one day and come back the next for The Mains was my conclusion.
Stewart was happy to see The Fish having heard so much about it. This is always a Treat. So Light, Fresh, Spicy, with the Yadgar Vegetable Curry as a Side, this would be Satisfying as a Main Event.
The Interlude
It was obvious we would need a break between The Starters and The Curry. Before I had a chance to suggest this, The Curry was served, Six Chapattis too. Here we go.

Yadgar May30 Curry-Heute (16)Yadgar May30 Curry-Heute (18)

Yadgar May30 Curry-Heute (22)Yadgar May30 Curry-Heute (21)

Mags’ strategy is to start her Main and take a Doggy Bag, this was always going to happen today. Eleanor managed most of her Portion, meanwhile across the table, Hector and Stewart divvied up the Kilo of Goshat Karahi.

Yadgar May30 Curry-Heute (17)This was possibly the Driest Interpretation I have been served at Yadgar. Eleanor noticed ours had Extra Green Chillies added, she had been spared this. Stewart found ours to be not Too Spicy and marvelled at the Depth of Flavour. This is what Yadgar Curry is about. You couldn’t eat this every day, a Truly Rich, Flavoursome Curry.
Yadgar May30 Curry-Heute (23)Yadgar May30 Curry-Heute (24)

Shkoor always manages to make an appearance just as we are nearing the End Game. Is there a video link installed to his domicile? He was happy to see Four Contented Diners.
The Fish is a meal in itself – admitted Shkoor.
The Exit StrategyYadgar May30 Curry-Heute (25)
The remnants in the Large Karahi were added to that small amount which defeated Eleanor, One Doggy Bag. Mags found the Two Halves of Chapli accompanied her surplus Aloo Gosht. Two Doggy Bags.

The Bill
£60.00. The Standard Charge. Today the Profits were Marginal.

The AftermathYadgar May30 Curry-Heute (26)
The Ladies posed with their Takeaways. There was a mention that the Exterior of Yadgar may also be given some attention.

Helensburgh – Akash – Some Came From New Zealand

Akash Helensburgh May29 Curry-Heute (6)Mark is over from New Zealand in the company of Jude who henceforth will be referred to in the highest of accolades – The Lady from Bradford. Alan and Tracy would complete The Company for the necessary visit to the Akash (45 Sinclair St, Helensburgh, G84 8TG). Mark, Alan and Hector have eaten here a few times. I let Mark estimate how many visits he thought Hector could have made to this and the previous premises. Mark came up with 1200. Hector considers 1000 as a Realistic Figure, this number continues to increase.
There was a stop-off in the revamped Colquhoun Square to mark the CHORD renovations.

Akash Helensburgh May29 Curry-Heute (1)Akash Helensburgh May29 Curry-Heute (3)

The town centre looks smart, a pity it took so long. The chewing gum stains are accumulating once more, time for those who should to consider this. For once, The Planners cannot be blamed.
Irfan and the new chap greeted us on entry, actually the ladies were in first, there was a photographic ritual at the door. It was good to see other customers present, the good people of Helensburgh appear to have overlooked what they have on their doorstep. Curry at the Akash has been transformed in the last couple of years since Ashgar and Rashid took over.
The order for Alan and Hector’s Curry was sent in yesterday – Achari Gosht on-the-bone. Mark, starting from first principles, chose Methi Gosht Karahi, the Dish that kicked-off the New-co Revolution on these premises. Tracy once more avoided Lamb – Chicken Tikka Spinach Balti – Hot. If Hector was to have a Chicken Curry this would be probably be it. The Lady from Bradford spotted – Lamb Mint Coriander Masala. I was able to tell her that Colleague Jamie has this as his Standard. Done.
Akash Helensburgh May29 Curry-Heute (12)Akash Helensburgh May29 Curry-Heute (13)

Akash Helensburgh May29 Curry-Heute (11)Akash Helensburgh May29 Curry-Heute (14)

Plain Naan, Garlic and Coriander Naan, Pilao Rice and finally a Keema Paratha for Hector completed the Sundries.

Herding a Bag of Cats?

There were hands waving everywhere this evening, hence the blurry photos.

Akash Helensburgh May29 Curry-Heute (4)Akash Helensburgh May29 Curry-Heute (5)

A Pile of Poppadoms and Dips were brought in a flash, there was nearly a call for more Spiced Onion. One can.

Akash Helensburgh May29 Curry-Heute (8)Akash Helensburgh May29 Curry-Heute (9)

Despite this being a Friday, it was believed we would be permitted to enjoy fixed price a la carte dining. Starters were therefore mandatory. Two Mixed Combos and a Fish Pakora, the couples would share, Hector would not. Marg had her Club Hockey Dinner this evening, I still would not have shared. The Mixed Combo is the best possible way to Prelude a Feast, the Fish Pakora looked fresh and Interesting too, still, one cannot have everything.

Akash Helensburgh May29 Curry-Heute (15)Akash Helensburgh May29 Curry-Heute (16)

Akash Helensburgh May29 Curry-Heute (18)Akash Helensburgh May29 Curry-Heute (20)

There was a sufficient gap between Starters and Mains, thankfully. The Mains were top quality. The Lady from Bradford put away her Curry no problem but not before she had marvelled at the size of her Naan. Has she not been to Omar’s? Everyone was happy with what they had ordered, perhaps individual comments may follow. Hector was too busy focusing on the wonder of the Hector Special #4 – Achari Gosht on-the-bone.

Akash Helensburgh May29 Curry-Heute (19)Topped with Dry Methi, the Masala was intense, Seasoned to perfection and not too-Spiced, this was remarkable. The Masala was truly Thick, Rashid had worked his wonders again. The bone content was imbalanced, Alan had next to none, the pile was growing beside Hector. Irfan was beckoned. He had already apologised for bringing a Keema Naan instead of Paratha, the offer to change it had been declined. Time to ask – I take it there is more of this in the kitchen? Of course there was and another portion was brought in moments.

Akash Helensburgh May29 Curry-Heute (35)Akash Helensburgh May29 Curry-Heute (34)

This satisfied the Hector. Alan initially denied the need for more then helped himself. A Doggy Bag took care of the small surplus. The Keema Naan, a first for Hector, had the individual pieces of Mince spread across the interior – a true Keema Naan, not the Donner-like spread the majority of venues serve up. This was service of the highest order. What more can the Akash do?

The Aftermath

Mark and The Lady from Bradford took their leave. Alan, Tracy and Hector finished off their post-aperitifs. The statue on the window ledge amuses Alan. The folk who had been sitting there had now gone, a photo opperchancity.

Does this chap look like Lemmy?

Glasgow – Yadgar’s Renovations Underway + Hector’s Final Holiday

Yadgar Glasgow May25 Curry-Heute (1) It is the End of May Bank Holiday Monday, as opposed to the Mayday Bank Holiday which was rarely a Holiday in the World of Hector. What is significant, today is Hector’s last ever Holiday from work. Twenty three more working days to go then the R-word… How should Hector mark the day?
Marg and Hector set out for the South Side early afternoon, there had to be a Curry-Heute, and the Curry had to be at the Restaurant (to use the term loosely) where Hector has enjoyed more Curry Experiences than any other Venue since the birth of this Website –  Yadgar (148 Calder St, Govanhill, Glasgow, G42 7QP).  Naveed was in his usual place behind the counter, manning the show. He was not expecting us, normally the order for Lamb Karahi – Hector-style – has been placed directly with The Management. Today I decided to see what was on offer, at worst I could have a Starter then wait the required Forty Five minutes for a Karahi to be prepared.
Yadgar Glasgow May25 Curry-Heute (2)Yadgar Glasgow May25 Curry-Heute (3)

Before Naveed talked me through the prepared Dishes he pointed towards the Dining Area which was in some disarray. Boards covered the floor, one toilet door said – Out of order – the other had been blocked over. Chairs were stacked at the window, some tables were away from the wall. Ah, paint, mosaic too! Curryspondents, the much promised renovation of the interior of Yadgar is now underway! And not before time.
On offer today were various Chicken Dishes, Liver too. Two Lamb Dishes stood out from these, Aloo Gosht and Karela Gosht. The latter was on-the-bone. Karela I have grown fond of, but have not consumed much of, in recent times. The Bitter Vegetable. Since I was not having a Karahi, this was the perfect opperchancity to re-visit the Wonderful Yadgar Vegetable Rice. Marg had previously decided a Starter would do. Mushroom Pakora was on display, Marg asked for Mixed Pakora.
Yadgar Glasgow May25 Curry-Heute (4)Yadgar Glasgow May25 Curry-Heute (5)

Yadgar Glasgow May25 Curry-Heute (6)The customary cans of Rubicon Mango were brought by the relatively new still Nameless Waiter, then the Complimentary Poppadoms (Four!) and Dips. Marg remarked on the Quality of the Spiced Onions. Chunky too. Naveed brought the Glasses and the Yadgar Salad. The Salad has evolved over the years from Modest to Substantial. With Black Olives and two types of Pickled Green Chillies this is quite a Feast in itself. We both knew what was about to happen.
Mr Anwar Sr. entered the premises. Having removed his coat, he was straight across. The Renovations were very much the discussion point, for once Curry was not mentioned. Having witnessed The Workers at Work during the exterior renovations he was clearly not putting any exact time on the completion of this project. The floor had in fact been finished, new tiles were just about visible. A single toilet door will give access to the separate Ladies and Gents. Hopefully both of these will be totally gutted and brought into the Twenty First Century. The work is being done from 07.00 until 13.00 so that they can carry on with their business of serving the Best Curry in Glasgow.
The work could be completed by the end of this week. I am tempted to return on Saturday.

Yadgar Glasgow May25 Curry-Heute (7)We know the Review of the Karela Gosht is going to be Wonderful, so lets begin with the Mixed Pakora. Look at the Size of it! For Marg, this had Defeat written all over it. Yadgar is also a Takeaway, so no worries, Hector was already looking forward to sampling the Leftovers at a later time.
Yadgar Glasgow May25 Curry-Heute (8)The Fish Pakora was plentiful. Fish in Batter – was how Marg described it. Methinks it be far more than this. The tell-tale Coriander Leaves gave away that there was Subtle Spicing in there too. Fish at Yadgar  is always a Treat, check any Review where The Friends of Hector have – been fed -, the Scottish Haddock. I have never seen the point of Chicken Pakora, the Meat adds nothing. Surely Chicken Chaat or Tikka is a much better Starter? Still, Marg enjoyed this too, well she ordered it. Mushroom Pakora can be Rubbery, these were not. The Vegetable Pakora was Fairly Standard. All was Fresh and Tasty.
Marg ate more than she anticipated, she had to keep herself amused whilst Hector did his thing. When it came time to Bag the Plate, Naveed admitted to Marg that she had only been given so much because of who she was sitting opposite.
Let’s take time to consider the venues which give Four or Five Pieces of Pakora as a Serving, AND charge approaching half the price of a Main Course too.

Karela Gosht
Yadgar Glasgow May25 Curry-Heute (10)It has been a while indeed. The Curry looked very similar to the Karahi which is normally consumed. The Masala was identical, Thick and Minimal and Shrouds the Meat like no other Masala I have encountered. One can tell the Masala belongs to the Meat, they are as one, not Sauce poured over Meat and – how do you do? The Lamb was on-the-bone, believe me, this is important, so much more Flavour. The distinctive Yadgar Taste was there, not as intense as in the Karahi, the Karela may have tempered this by adding its Natural Bitterness. The Karela was visible but not over-present. An abundance would have sent us down the – let’s cover the Curry in Onion and Capsicum route.
Seeking a Quality Vegetable Rice has bubbled up once more in Hector’s priorities. With Karahi it has to be Bread, study the Splendour of what was presented here, then Cringe! Mr. Arshad was nowhere to be seen today, he would know. The #3 Chef remains unknown to Hector – still – in went the Capsicum, Hector sat and picked out every offending piece before smothering it. The Potato content was to the fore, the Mushrooms and Peas brought up the rear. This made for a Very Filling Meal, and Hector had only ordered a Portion, not the usual Half Kilo.
Yadgar Glasgow May25 Curry-Heute (12)Yadgar Glasgow May25 Curry-Heute (9)

I was nearing the End-Game when Shkoor entered. He was upon us immediately knowing full well that I had not pre-arranged this meal.
Oh, what have they done?! – he remarked on seeing the Pile of Offending Green Mush.

Yadgar Glasgow May25 Curry-Heute (11)

The Bill
£12.50. A Mountain of Food.

The Aftermath
There was a lengthy discussion with Shkoor about the Curry, and of course the Renovations. The new colour of the wall may be an undercoat.

Update

New Curryspondent Stanley has provided the following information:
The long awaited renovations are underway, wall tiles in the eating area and the toilets look first class. I am told that all the equipment in the carryout counter area and the kitchen is being replaced. I hope it does not affect the flavours of Glasgows best curry house.
Regards
Stanley

Crawley – The Downsman – Not up to the usual High Standard…

South Downs Bier-Traveller.comDownsman Crawley May23 Curry-Heute (1)

Hector had worked up an appetite. A walk in the South Downs with Marg, Clive, Maggie and Eight Others saw us return to Crawley around 20.00, only The Faithful felt the need for Curry-Heute. There is only one venue when one is on such a short visit – The Downsman (Wakehurst Drive, Southgate, Crawley, RH10 6DH. Yes, it is only two weeks since Clive and Hector last dined here together. Crawley has its attractions, The Downsman is certainly one of them.
Downsman Crawley May23 Curry-Heute (3)Two staff acknowledged me as I entered, some familiar staff members were conspicuous by their absence this evening. The place was stowed, what looked like a large party was nearing its conclusion in the main dining area. We were taken to a high table beside the pool table on the far side, not ideal, but we were in.
The Young Lady behind the bar asked to see her photo on Curry-Heute, this suggests she is not a regular visitor to this Website as her Two Colleagues are. It was agreed that we would order at the bar, table service had been shelved, it was that busy.
There had to be Lamb Chops, Two Portions. Hector has learned his lesson and will now share a Portion of Six Chops. Maggie may not, Crispy Bhindi was added to the Starters on her behalf.
Lamb Rara has been cropping up all over the place in recent times, Hector would have to sample this. Lamb served in a Masala with Lamb Mince.  Slowly, very slowly, I might get round the Downsman Menu, well the Lamb sections. Clive took a step back in time and selected the Chicken Dansak. Maggie went for her usual – Chicken Saagwala. Marg maintained the highest of standards and chose Keema Mutter. There is a Keema Methi Variant on the Menu, however, Marg stuck to her guns.
Downsman Crawley May23 Curry-Heute (17)Downsman Crawley May23 Curry-Heute (16)

Maggie and Hector required Rice, Mushroom Rice. Marg’s single Chapatti would become a Roti and once more Clive returned to the familiar – Keema Naan.
The Bill
£58.20. As ever, this was for the Food only, Drinks were purchased separately.

The Starters
Downsman Crawley May23 Curry-Heute (4)Downsman Crawley May23 Curry-Heute (6)

The Lamb Chops were presented on a single platter, Sizzling as ever, Superb.

Downsman Crawley May23 Curry-Heute (5)Maggie’s Crispy Bhindi became a distraction briefly. The Okra had been sliced longways and was dipped in a Spicy Coating. How the Chef managed to keep the Okra this Dry was impressive. Downsman Crawley May23 Curry-Heute (8)The Dish looked like Fish Bait as served in Greece. The Palate expected a Salty Blast, this was quite a subtle dish. We all sampled the Crispy Bhindi and were impressed. Meanwhile the Lamb Chops required our attention.
Lamb Chops have to be Hot, Succulent and Spicy, these hit the mark. Marg was rounding up the Sliced Onions which were still cooking on the Platter. She admitted later that she had over-indulged on these. Downsman Crawley May23 Curry-Heute (9)Lamb Chops, mmmm.  Maggie forced down half a Lamb Chop too.
When The Waiter came to clear up the debris, I pointed to one of the Bowls which housed the Dips.
Can I have some Dry Methi served in one of these please?
It took a couple of attempts to convince him that this simple request was indeed what I wanted. Apparently not a problem.
The Curry
We had been asked at the counter if we wanted all the food to come at once. Perhaps because they were being run off their feet, the gap between Mains and Starters was most acceptable. The Chops had been given time to digest.
Downsman Crawley May23 Curry-Heute (18)Downsman Crawley May23 Curry-Heute (14)

Marg enjoyed her Keema Mutter – Very good, it’s a long time since I had it. A wee kick, a pleasant change.
Downsman Crawley May23 Curry-Heute (19)Downsman Crawley May23 Curry-Heute (13)

Clive is rarely disappointed by a Dansak, tonight was no exception. Stacks of meat, creamier than it needed to be.
Downsman Crawley May23 Curry-Heute (12)Of all the Dishes on the table, Maggie’s Chicken Saagwala looked the most enticing. A Lamb version must be investigated in the future. Whilst she enjoyed her Curry, her frustration became more visible. Chaps at the adjacent table were backing into her and causing discomfort. She was not amused.  We were here – To Dine!
Downsman Crawley May23 Curry-Heute (20)Downsman Crawley May23 Curry-Heute (21)

Hector started happy, however this did not last. The Lamb Rara looked to be part of the Hector Curry Script, it was served Tepid. The Seasoning was not there, there was no sense of Spice.

Downsman Crawley May23 Curry-Heute (10)Downsman Crawley May23 Curry-Heute (11)

The word – Bland – has to be used. Hector does not slate Curry as a rule, this Dish was a Major Disappointment. The Extra Methi sprinkled on top, could not rescue the Rara either. Warm food will cool, cool food can never regain the intensity of Flavour. Sorry, but this Curry did not impress.

Downsman Crawley May23 Curry-Heute (22)Downsman Crawley May23 Curry-Heute (23)

Marg had some Keema Mutter left over.  Despite it being some five to ten minutes since she stopped eating, her Mince was still warmer than my Lamb Rara had been initially served.  Should I have sent it back?  I do not recall in the epoch of Curry-Heute doing so, unless someone had brought me Chicken.

Even the best venues can have an off day, or are they simply victims of their own success?

Helensburgh – Akash – An Impromptu Visit

Akash Helensburgh May22 Curry-Heute (2)Akash Helensburgh May22 Curry-Heute (1)

With an early rise in the morning, Marg and Hector headed home early for a Friday, via the Akash (45 Sinclair St, Helensburgh, G84 8TG). It was pleasing to see other couples of similar minds. We were shown to our usual table on the Dais by the new Young Waiter, Irfan was surprised when he finally spotted us.
Sharing a Mixed Combo felt appropriate. Marg let me choose her Curry, and so Aloo Gosht Karahi with a Methi Topping it was. Times, two, one Normal, one Spicy. A Single Mince Paratha would accompany. Why did I order a Mince Paratha when I had ordered Potato in the Curry? Mince and Potatoes!
Akash Helensburgh May22 Curry-Heute (3)Akash Helensburgh May22 Curry-Heute (4)

The Mixed Combo is perfect for sharing. The Seekh Kebab halves easily, this, the Pair of Chicken Tikka and Lamb Tikka pieces disappeared in no time at all. We must leave room for The Mains.
Akash Helensburgh May22 Curry-Heute (5)Hector’s Spicy Aloo Gosht Karahi had visibly more Dry Methi on Top, Marg had yet to experience this recent Variation.
Hot Food can Cool. Cold Food cannot improve itself. This Curry was served Hot! Perfect. The Spice level was OTT, Rashid in the kitchen had done Hector proud. You ask for Spicy, you get Spicy.
Akash Helensburgh May22 Curry-Heute (8)The First Dip of the Paratha was into the gathering Oil, what a way to start. This combination of Paratha, Potato and Lamb was Excellent, as Wonderful a Curry as can be served at the Akash. It became apparent that the Paratha was not going to last, a single Chapatti was summoned for the sake of speed.

Akash Helensburgh May22 Curry-Heute (7)Akash Helensburgh May22 Curry-Heute (12)

The Paratha was gone so quickly there was no time to inspect the interior. Careless Hector. In moments the Curry Ritual was under-way once more. Remarkably, the Lamb and the Potato were as Soft as each other. Akash Helensburgh May22 Curry-Heute (9)Who was enjoying the Experience more, Hector or Marg?  The Methi Topping is the icing on the cake.

In Helensburgh, it has to be the Akash.

Akash Helensburgh May22 Curry-Heute (10)Akash Helensburgh May22 Curry-Heute (11)

Akash Helensburgh May22 Curry-Heute (14)Marg must have a White Coffee at the Akash. Again this is served is served exactly how she likes it, Milky and Hot!

Who ate the After Eights? Nobody!

The Bill
£29.00. Irfan said he was not charging us the Flat Fee of £15.00, we hadn’t eaten enough.

The Aftermath
The customary chat with Rashid followed the meal. Our travels continue, Rashid marvels at the places we get to. There will be a another Curry-Heute review soon from one of Hector’s favourite English Curry Houses. Just the 05.00 rise to cope with now.
We haven’t see Ashgar for a while.

Glasgow – Masala Zing – Is Cafe Salma Slowly Being Resurrected?

Steve and Hector found themselves on the train to Glasgow. Before anything else there had to be Curry-Heute. Masala Zing (523 Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow, G3 7PQ) has many advantages: it is open all afternoon, it is near Charing Cross Station and it sells Damn Good Curry.
Akhtar had the door open and his hand outstretched as we entered just on 16.00. Akhtar and Steve were introduced, though they may have met at some point in the past three years.
Masala Zing May21 Curry-Heute (1)We had perused the Desi Menu on the train on the journey into town. Steve was already interested in the Lamb Rarra, A Lamb Dish with Lamb Mince in the Masala. A Garlic and Coriander Naan would accompany. Hector was in the mood for a Dish which dates back to the days of Cafe SalmaGinger Lime Bhoona (Lamb), with Mixed Vegetable Rice as Accompaniment.

Complimentary Poppadoms and Dips made an appearance, eventually.
One could not help but notice that behind the counter there is an array of Soft Drinks on display, no alcohol, though there is a Bier Tap. Do they still have a Drinks Licence? I didn’t ask, I’m not bothered.
What makes the Curry at Masala Zing  stand out is the Thickness of the Masala, maintaining the Standard set by Cafe Salma . Akhtar was interested in our verdict, it was The Other Chef who was on duty this afternoon, not Assif, the ex-Salma Chef.

Masala Zing May21 Curry-Heute (6)Masala Zing May21 Curry-Heute (3)

Steve was impressed by his Lamb Rarra, I shall try this next time. Full of Flavour, I have to take his word, no way were we sharing. The Naan was Quartered which for me spoils the fun of tearing off strips. I also enjoy the visual impact of a Whole Naan.
Masala Zing May21 Curry-Heute (8)Masala Zing May21 Curry-Heute (2)

The Ginger Lime Bhoona tasted exactly as it said on The Menu. The crunch of the Fresh Ginger Strips and the Full-on Lime Flavour had the required impact. Achari by any other name, but Achari is also on The Menu, so what is the difference?
Masala Zing May21 Curry-Heute (5)Masala Zing May21 Curry-Heute (4)

The Vegetable Rice was absolutely out of the Top Drawer. A Good Portion of Rice, laced with Potatoes, Cauliflower, Chickpeas, Carrots and Mushrooms. A meal in itself, it complemented the Curry, Perfection.
Masala Zing May21 Curry-Heute (7)We ate the lot, clean plates all round. We didn’t like it – I said to Akhtar as he cleared away the crockery. He could tell.
Manoj and Nasif have not been seen on two consecutive visits. I had to ask.
Nasif is working elsewhere until such times as business picks up and he can return. It could well be – Farewell – to Manoj. Akhtar is running the place with his Sons. A different Son was on duty this afternoon, there are Five.

The Bill
£32.15. Still a Pound a head dearer than Surrounding Venues.

The Aftermath
Cafe Salma in effect continues in all but name. Perhpas Akhtar may feel entitled to reinstate the brand.

Glasgow – Cafe Reeshah – Not just for The Weegies

Cafe Reeshah Glasgow May20 Curry-Heute (1)What is Hector doing on the South-side on a random Wednesday lunchtime in May? It is most certainly not a holiday.
Last night’s dinner was approaching disaster. Lesson learned #127.5, do not add leftover Couscous to a Tomato-based Sauce, it looks totally unappetising. So much so, Marg and Hector ate very little yesterday. With enough work for the day completed, Hector glanced at his Weekday Lunch, the Perpetual Fruit Diet continues. As Winnie-the-Pooh famously said – There’s a rumbly in my tumbly… A quick glance at a well known and reliable Curry Blog, I’m on my way, ah-ha…
Café Reeshah (455 Shields Rd, Glasgow, G41 1NP) is in its third year of operation under the current management. They serve potentially the Best Keema Mutter in Glasgow. Potentially? I discovered when taking Marg there last November, Keema Mutter is not always available.
Entering just after 13.30, Mein – The Most Modest – Host in Glasgow smiled in recognition. I parked my jacket over the back of one of the nine available chairs, there only are nine. This was to establish I was here to Sit and Savour, not for a Takeaway which Café Reeshah basically is.
Approaching the counter I could see the pre-prepared Curry Dishes, no sign of Keema, no sign of Lamb at all.

Mein Host talked me through the KurryPakora Curry, Daal, Chickpeas, Chicken… I even spotted Spinach. Not really what I was looking for. He lifted a tray on the far side – Aloo Gosht, then another – Mince and Potatoes. Both looked wonderful, Hector was here for the Keema.
A bit of both? He suggested. Oh yes, and two Chapattis.   Buttered or Plain?       Buttered.
What is the Hector doing ordering two Chapattis at lunchtime? Autopilot, hunger.
Plates of Curry were taken away for reheating, I heard no – Ding, but who knows?

The late Lunchtime Trade was brisk, Curry and Pizza were being purchased, far too early for a Kebab, Ten hours too early.

The Music Machine burst into life. Before, Dear Reader, you think Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is the only Qawwali singer Hector knows, and Allah Hoo the only Asian song … I was exposed to this famous song in its warm up stages, however, the voice was as familiar as it was unfamiliar. Did Nusrat record this Fifty Years ago, or has some young upstart dared to re-record this classic? Who has a copy of this epic with the British chaps playing synthesiser as backing?

Cafe Reeshah Glasgow May20 Curry-Heute (8)Cafe Reeshah Glasgow May20 Curry-Heute (4)Plates were assembled on the counter, Mein Host was the aerial conveyor, first to be set down was a single Chicken Seekh Kebab. He wanted me to sample it, and so I did, and as is befitting those who wish to feed the Hector, it is reviewed. What might be considered a half portion of Aloo Gosht followed and a fair-sized portion of Chicken Mince and Potatoes (Aloo Murgh Keema) was placed last.

Cafe Reeshah Glasgow May20 Curry-Heute (7)Cafe Reeshah Glasgow May20 Curry-Heute (10)

Let’s not overlook Two of the ifnest Chapattis I have seen in weeks. Large and with girth, these were taunting. They had the stamp of authenticity all over them. Two Chapattis. Folded over, the moistness from the Butter was retained inside whilst I tackled the Kebab.
Chicken or Lamb, Seekh Kebabs are a great way to start a meal. This was Fresh and Spicy. Accompanied by a Modest Salad and a generous plate of Raita, an amusement to start.
What Next?
Cafe Reeshah Glasgow May20 Curry-Heute (5)One Dish would cool whilst the other was consumed, or tackle both at once?
The Lamb and Potato in a near-Shorva was further from the heart’s desire. What looked like four pieces of Lamb became Six. The Lamb was also on-the-bonefour Bones, one a Sucky.
The first dof the Buttered Chapatti in the Masala – Oh, yes. The kick, the Seasoning. This was another treat, to think I could have missed out. The classic 1960s Curry Flavours, way thinner than the Hector onrm but not so thin to be a Shorva-proper.  Some may disagree, however, this packed a suitable Tasty punch. Mein Host was over to inspect the proceedings. All was well. The Potato content was confusing given the size of the pieces. There was much more – than I first thought.
Chicken Today
Cafe Reeshah Glasgow May20 Curry-Heute (9)And so Hector had another Chicken experience. Chicken Tikka Masala looms. The Oil content was so minimal there was next to no residue on the plate at the end. More Seasoning required, this did not have – The Wow – I have experienced from the Lamb Mince version. Still, the kick was there, Dry as Curry can be served, no Masala to speak of. With the fresh Tomatoes on top, the much sought after Diversity of Texture; how many boxes ticked? As the second Chapatti was tackled the realisation had long since hit home, no way should I have ordered this one. Still, we are not in Aberdoom where Two Chapattis cost as much as a Glasgow Curry.
My mouth loved me, the stomach was wondering wtf? Where’s the Apple and Orange? This is hopefully the shape of things to come and why Hector shall retain ownership of his own vehicle for as long as is viable. Desi Lunch in the South-side Curry Cafés?

The Bill
I offered £10.00. There was £2.00 change.

The Aftergmath
I asked Mein Host if business was doing well. He put this down to his prices. There is a lot of competition in this part of the city.
He told me he is happy and impressed by the fact that people are coming from outside Glasgow to enjoy the Fayre.
Somebody is doing something right.

This is a reat Lunchtime Venue.  Go soon before popularity has people Queuing for a seat.

Now to go home and prepare Paella.  Marg, Dinner is at 22.00.

Glasgow – New Karahi Palace – The Weekend Concludes

New Karahi Palace Glasgow May16 Curry-Heute (22)The Monthly Trip to The Staggs, Musselburgh was behind us. Nigel had won his Rightful Award. Who wins Awards? Craig, Yvonne and Mags would join Hector for the Ritual Post Staggs Curry at the New Karahi Palace (51-53 Nelson Street, Tradeston, Glasgow, G5 8DZ). Arriving around 20.30, the Downstairs tables were mostly occupied and it was draughty, Upstairs it was. Ah, Noises from Upstairs. What might have been a Kiddies Curry Party was drawing to a close. There was a lot of Kids, Curry had been served, that’s how The Brain of Hector interpreted the situation.

Mags was having – The Best Aloo Gosht in Glasgow. Yvonne, making her visit here in years, followed the Mags’ Recommendation. Craig would re-experience the Dish hNew Karahi Palace Glasgow May16 Curry-Heute (29)e so enjoyed two weeks ago – Chicken Karahi. He was offered Palak but stuck to his guns and had the Chicken version of the Hector Lamb Karahi with Dry Methi sprinkled on top.
The Spanish Lady was missing tonight, instead we had a new Young Waitress who speaks English. Remarkable. Ayaz, Mein Host, was still on hand to take the order. All was well.
The Modest Salad and Raita were nibbled by The Ladies, The Chaps observed.

Ayaz brought the Curry and Chapattis, plus one Portion of Rice. The Chapattis were halved, please do not do this!

Superbly Tender Lamb in a Minimal Masala Mush, a Curry Fantasy. A Fantastic Curry. There is only one Glasgow Curry Venue which can outperform this.

With a Standard Portion, The Ladies were finished long before The Chaps. Still the best Aloo Gosht in Glasgow – confirmed Mags. Yvonne was in Raptures.
Absolutely amazing… with a kick to it I haven’t had since Café Salma. A good hit without being overpowering. Yvonne will be back.

Craig ate on regardless. With no knife to hand, it took him an age to complete his Chicken Karahi. Edinburgh-types evidently do not use their fingers to eat Chicken.  Before he had a chance to make his report we were joined by Taxi Marg. An early close to the weekend’s proceedings for Hector.

The Aftermath
There was time on the journey home to take stock of the weekend. It has been hectic. Now to entertain our house-guests.

Helensburgh – Akash – A One Bell, Pre Ale Fest, Curry

Hector has become aware that the Akash (45 Sinclair St, Helensburgh, G84 8TG) tends to be open before the advertised 17.00. Yesterday I popped in before 16.30 to ask if they could guarantee being open for business at this time. There was a demand for Early Curry so as to get to the Helensburgh Ale Fest (at The Sailing Club) on time and get a seat.
Dr. Stan, Steve and Hector walked up the stairs at 16.25, a Chap was already coming out with a large Takeaway, we’re definitely Open.
Irfan looked at me, he expected me in at least another hour. Why?
They’re making something for you, it is not ready. It was established that another forty five minutes was required for Rashid to create his Dish. What was being prepared was not forthcoming. By the time we have our Starters this would be perfect timing.
Akash Helensburgh May15 Curry-Heute (1)Poppadoms and Dips were brought, enough for Five. Jamie and Iain arrived moments later. By this time Irfan had confirmed that – The Dish – would be Lamb on-the-bone and there would be enough for Three. That was Dr. Stan Steve and Hector sorted, the joy of being punctual.
Iain, on his first visit, had to find his way through The Menu. Lamb Karahi was his choice. How would this compare to that which was served initially and then evolved into The Hector Special #1? Jamie repeated his order for Lamb Mint Coriander Masala from our previous visit.
Irfan offered us Lamb Chops as a Starter, a First! Steve took up the offer, however Hector had images of the Mixed Combo flashing through his mind all day, it had to be. Dr. Stan and Iain followed the lead, Jamie the reduced version – Lamb Tikka.
Akash Helensburgh May15 Curry-Heute (7)Akash Helensburgh May15 Curry-Heute (8)

Plain Paratha, Vegetable Paratha and Mince Rice were ordered. Hector asked for – Vegetable Rice with no Capsicum. Normally it is Mushroom Rice that is presented, this was an attempt to see if they would take up the Challenge and bring something radically different.
Anticipation is Everything
Akash Helensburgh May15 Curry-Heute (5)Akash Helensburgh May15 Curry-Heute (3)The Mixed Combo is One Seekh Kebab, Two Pieces of Chicken Tikka and Two Pieces of Lamb Tikka. The Spiciness from the Seekh Kebab Titillates The Palate. The Succulence of the Chicken Tikka complements this. The Intensity of Flavour from the Lamb Tikka brings this Starter to a Wonderful Conclusion. Jamie demolished the Lamb Tikka, without the build up it’s not the same.
Akash Helensburgh May15 Curry-Heute (2)Steve was given Four Good-sized Lamb Chops. Two had Big Bones, two Small. Tasty! Next time. We were on the £15.00 eat a la Carte Deal despite it being a Friday. Cheers, Rashid!

Technically, it isn’t Friday, yet.

A Day without Curry is Incomplete
The Mains and Sundries were brought @17.15, on schedule. The Lamb on-the-bone was Topped with Dry Methi as has become the Akash Norm.
So what is this? I asked Irfan.
The Hector Special.
Akash Helensburgh May15 Curry-Heute (9)This must be Hector Special #4. Dry Masala, Thick with Methi. Rashid is a Regular Reader of Curry-Heute, he knows.
Akash Helensburgh May15 Curry-Heute (19)Akash Helensburgh May15 Curry-Heute (12)

Enough Vegetable Rice for Two, it contained Sliced Carrots, Cauliflower and Peas. This was a Splendid Accompaniment. The Curry was carefully arranged on top. A Paratha may well have been a better Sundry for the Quality of Curry set before us, however, this Vegetable Rice provided the much sought after Array of Textures.
Akash Helensburgh May15 Curry-Heute (15)The Seasoning was less intense than has been served previously, Steve was glad. The Spice Level was at a Killer Level. The Tenderest of Lamb had minimal Bones in the Hector Portion, some in Steve’s, Dr. Stan took the brunt. This was Excellent Curry but still a bit short of – Wow! The Good People of Glasgow’s Yadgar, and Bradford even know something I do not.

Akash Helensburgh May15 Curry-Heute (21)Akash Helensburgh May15 Curry-Heute (18)

Dr. Stan uttered his appreciative – Mmmm – as soon as he started. Fantastic, rich and spicy – was his eventual conclusion.

That was rare! – remarked Steve. The Meat was amazing. This man used to eschew Lamb on-the-bone. The Extra Flavours Lamb cooked in its bones add to a Curry have oft been recorded in this Website. Every Curry House should offer this.
Akash Helensburgh May15 Curry-Heute (16)Akash Helensburgh May15 Curry-Heute (13)

Iain’s Lamb Karahi was close (I think) to the Hector Special #1. The overload of Spinach as first served in the early days of Akash New-co have laid to rest. This looked just the job.
Excellent, just hot enough to have a kick. This was perfect. He’ll be back.
Akash Helensburgh May15 Curry-Heute (17)Akash Helensburgh May15 Curry-Heute (14)

Not a fan of Mint, Hector will never order the Mint Coriander Masala, so Jamie’s verdict is crucial – Splendid. The Mint made it cool but it was spicy and tangy.

Five Very Satisfied Customers.

The Bill
£78.00. 5 x £15.00 plus Two Soft Drinks. Outstanding Value.

The Aftermath
We made a sharp exit. Winter has returned to Helensburgh. Tim, a regular reader of Curry-Heute, was in charge of the Festival Ale. At least there were no worries about it being warm.
